Ben Gabaldon | Audio Design

First things first, A couple short stories:

My introduction to audio was a second hand multitrack tape recorder and no idea how to use it. Years of patience, tinkering, and a persistent curiosity for tweaking and improving recordings has led to a focus in audio design for games, and more recently, home robotics.

Combining a love for crafting all styles of sound design, implementation planning, and refining a narrative through sound, I have been fortunate for the opportunity to contribute to a massive range of games and products in nearly every capacity of audio.

 Robotics

My focus for the past few years has been applying the tools and experience gained in interactive audio design to physical robots. As Lead Audio Designer of Anki, I collaborate with a team of sound designers, character artists, animators, game designers, and robotics engineers to develop and implement the unique personalities of our robots. It is impossible to demonstrate the complexity of character and interactivity of our robots’ audio design through video, but here’s a peek:

Wwise was integrated into Vector and Cozmo, each having thousands of sounds play through a small speaker mounted on top of their heads. They also rely on a combination of procedural and hand authored animations to support their complex personalities.
